An illusion of climate strategy

Total likes to present itself as a responsible business with a strategy for dealing with climate change.

The French company even published its own climate strategy, explaining how it intends to contribute to the goal of keeping global warming below 2°C.
But as France and Observatoires des multinationales reveal in this new report, Total’s actions and strategy are completely at odds with effective action to tackle the climate crisis.

Lack of ambition and misleading claims

Total’s strategy is completely inadequate.

It does not offer any significant departure from the company’s oil and gas extraction activities.

In fact Total plans to continue extracting fossil fuels from riskier environments, even as it acknowledges the climate science requiring the majority of fossil fuels to stay in the ground.

Their strategy also includes numerous omissions and misleading claims which calls into question the sincerity of their claims and published strategy.
